Plastics

One of the largest end-use categories for precipitated calcium carbonate is plastics, particularly for polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polyamides and thermoplastic polyester. Calcium carbonate has been traditionally used as the low cost filler in PVC, particularly in applications such as pipes, flooring, cable and other excluded goods.

In some of these applications, calcium carbonate offers benefits such as improved impact strength. In addition, surface-treated grades are now commonly used to aid in processing and to reduce wear on extrusion equipment; their hydrophobic and oleophilic properties also make them easier to disperse in plastic and rubber composites.

DSI plans producing a range of precipitated calcium carbonate products under the DCC trademark for the plastics industry.
